Ipod Nano 7th gen

Every time I connect my new ipod nano I get this message: "The iPod “iPod” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes." I have updated iTunes and my computer and still I keep getting that message. Any suggestions on what to try now? I have restarted computer and iPod also.
